Booking choice: The Matsushima day tour with cruise, from $171 per person. Check dates Tour details
Matsushima is the day trip almost everyone takes from Sendai, and the one that needs the least help. A direct local train, a compact town, every sight within a 15-minute walk of the station. The question is less how to get there than what to pay for once you arrive: the cruise, Zuiganji's new 1,000 yen ticket, the smaller temples, and possibly a guide.
Prices here are 2026 figures from the Matsushima cruise company, Zuiganji and the temples, set against the tours that go there.
The quick answer
Take the JR Senseki line from Sendai to Matsushima-Kaigan: about 40 minutes, 440 yen each way, no change. Zuiganji costs 1,000 yen since 1 April 2026, the 50-minute Niomaru cruise 1,500 yen. The whole day costs about 3,380 yen ($22) on your own. The $171 small-group tour adds a guide and pays every ticket for you; a private guide starts from $106 a head plus your own costs.

How do you get from Sendai to Matsushima by train?
JR Senseki line from Sendai station to Matsushima-Kaigan: about 40 minutes, 440 yen each way in 2026, direct.
The Senseki line platforms are underground at Sendai station, signed separately from the main JR platforms. Trains run several times an hour, and the IC card fare is the same 440 yen. From Matsushima-Kaigan the bay, the cruise pier and Godaido are five minutes on foot.
Two traps. Matsushima station on the Tohoku main line is a different station, a long walk from the bay; get off at Matsushima-Kaigan. And the Senseki-Tohoku line rapid trains to Ishinomaki run a different route and do not stop at Matsushima-Kaigan. Check the platform board for the Senseki line local.
The fare rose with the JR East price increase of 14 March 2026. Older listings still quote 840 yen for the round trip; it is 880 now.

Is a Matsushima tour worth it, or should you go alone?
Alone, if you are happy reading a map: the whole day costs about 3,380 yen. A tour pays off for the history, for a first day in Japan, or for a short ship stop.
The three tours that cover Matsushima are very different products.
| Option | Price | Included | You still pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| On your own | About 3,380 yen ($22) | Nothing | Train 880, Zuiganji 1,000, cruise 1,500 |
| Matsushima Bay day tour with cruise | $171 | Trains, all entries, 50-min cruise, guide, 15 guests max | Lunch |
| Private day with Mai | From $106 per person | Guide for 6 to 7 hours | Train, entries, cruise, lunch |
| Private half day, licensed guide | From $107 per person | Guide for 4 hours, 2 to 3 sights | Train or taxi, entries, cruise, lunch |
The private prices vary with group size: the from-price is the rate for the largest group. Mai's day has 22 reviews and a 5.0 rating, and guests mention her finding lunch spots, gyutan included. The small-group tour is the one to pick if you want to hand over every ticket and every timetable; one guest calls the tea house stop, with its view of the bay, the highlight.
Every ticket paid in advance: the trains, Zuiganji, Entsu-in, Kanrantei and the bay cruise.

The Niomaru course: 50 minutes, about 17 km round the bay, 1,500 yen, hourly from 9:00. Take the one-way Basho course instead if you start in Shiogama.
| Cruise | Length | Price (2026) | Departures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Niomaru course (large boat, loop from Matsushima) | About 50 min, 17 km | 1,500 yen; child 6-12 750; green deck +600 | Hourly 9:00 to 16:00; no 16:00 boat in winter |
| Basho course (one way, Shiogama to Matsushima) | About 50 min | 1,500 yen | Hourly 10:00 to 15:00 |
| Charter B (medium boat) | About 25 min | 13,500 yen for up to 15 | Your time |
| Charter C (medium boat) | About 40 min | 20,250 yen for up to 15 | Your time |
Fares from the Matsushima cruise company; the Basho course details come from its booking page. Green deck tickets are sold on board. Seating is first come, so join the line 10 minutes early if you want a window. The charter boats make sense for groups of six or more: they slip in close to islands the big boat can't approach.
The Basho course is the smarter plan for a full day. Train to Hon-Shiogama, walk to Marine Gate Shiogama, sail to Matsushima, and take the train home from Matsushima-Kaigan. You see the bay once, from the water, and never retrace a step.
Is Zuiganji worth 1,000 yen?
Yes. It is the Date family temple, its main hall is a National Treasure, and the cedar approach lined with carved caves costs nothing extra.
Zuiganji raised its entry from 700 to 1,000 yen for adults on 1 April 2026; children of elementary and junior high age pay 500 (zuiganji.or.jp). Date Masamune rebuilt the temple in 1609, and the main hall's painted sliding doors are the reason to go in. The approach through tall cedars passes caves cut into the rock, used over centuries by monks for meditation and memorials.
The gate opens at 8:30. Closing time moves with the season: 16:30 for much of the year, 16:00 in February and November, 15:30 in December and January. Last entry is 30 minutes before. Allow 40 minutes inside, the time the day tour gives it.

What else is there to see in Matsushima, and what does it cost?
Godaido and Oshima are free, Fukuurajima 200 yen, Entsu-in 500 yen, Kanrantei 200 yen. All of them sit along a short stretch of shore.
| Sight | What it is | Entry | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Godaido | Small hall on an islet, built for Date Masamune in 1604, reached by short bridges | Free | Daylight |
| Fukuurajima | Wooded island over the 252 m vermilion bridge | 200 yen | Daytime |
| Entsu-in | Temple and garden beside Zuiganji, mausoleum of Date Mitsumune | 500 yen | 9:00 to 16:00 (Dec to Mar 15:30) |
| Kanrantei | Tea house above the bay; matcha and a sweet cost extra | 200 yen | 8:30 to 17:00 (Nov to Mar 16:30) |
| Oshima | Islet of carved caves and monuments, over a red bridge | Free | Daylight |
Hours come from the Entsu-in listing; the tea house times from the Kanrantei page. Kanrantei is the quiet pick: sit on the veranda with a bowl of matcha and look at the islands. Fukuurajima takes 45 minutes there and back if you walk the island loop. Godaido is the photo everybody takes, and it is five minutes from the station.

Explore the private Matsushima day Tour detailsHow long do you need in Matsushima?
Half a day covers Zuiganji, Godaido and the cruise. A full day adds Entsu-in, Kanrantei, Fukuurajima and a long lunch.
A half-day plan that works: train at 9:00, Godaido at 9:45, the 10:00 cruise, Zuiganji at 11:00, lunch, back in Sendai by 14:00. The 4-hour private tour fits two or three of these, and guests warn you to keep up. Nate K. writes: "Be ready to walk briskly to make the ferry boat!"
A full day lets you slow down. The 8-hour day tour spends 30 minutes at Entsu-in, 40 at Zuiganji, an hour at the fish market and 50 minutes on the water. On your own, add Fukuurajima and Kanrantei and you still catch a train home before dark.
When can you eat oysters in Matsushima?
In the cold months, with the peak around February. The Matsushima oyster festival falls on the first Sunday of February.
Matsushima Bay farms oysters, and grill restaurants and seafood stalls along the waterfront serve them grilled, fried or in rice bowls through the cold season. The Matsushima Oyster Festival takes over Green Square near the pier each February, with grilled oysters and oyster soup.
Out of oyster season, eat anago (conger eel) on rice, sashimi at the fish market or, back in Sendai, gyutan. The day tour leaves an hour at the Matsushima fish market, which is the simplest lunch in town.

Can you add Shiogama to a Matsushima day?
Yes, and it is the best way to do the cruise: start in Shiogama by train and sail one way to Matsushima on the Basho course.
Shiogama is a fishing port on the same Senseki line, a few stops before Matsushima. Get off at Hon-Shiogama for Marine Gate Shiogama, where the Basho course boats leave hourly from 10:00 to 15:00. The town has a busy fish market and Shiogama Shrine on its hill. Guides adapt the day this way too: one Viator traveller on Mai's tour writes that on a rainy day she suggested the fish market in Shiogama instead, "a great suggestion" for seafood lovers.
Cruise passengers, note: Sendai-Shiogama port sits on this stretch of coast, and the ship shuttles usually stop at Nakanosakae on the same line. See day trips from Sendai for the cruise-day plan.
