Mai, Sendai Tohoku tours · Sendai
Mai, a Sendai-based guide, rides the local Senzan line with you to Yamadera and climbs the 1,015 stone steps of Risshakuji at your pace. Pick it for the stories on the way up: the monks, the Shinto and Buddhist halls, and the cicada haiku Basho wrote here in 1689.

Yamadera is the temple on the cliff: Hojusan Risshakuji, founded in 860, with halls tucked into the rock above a river valley in Yamagata Prefecture. It is one of the easiest day trips from Sendai. The JR Senzan line takes about an hour, with no change, and the temple starts 15 minutes' walk from Yamadera station. Mai meets you in front of the stained glass on the second floor of Sendai station at 9:00 and you take the 9:12 local train together.
On the mountain you get about an hour and a half on the climb: 1,015 steps through cedar forest to the Okunoin, past rock niches full of small stone statues, the red Kaisando on its crag and the Godaido platform with the view down the valley. Guests mention the history of the Buddhist and Shinto halls and Basho, and that she sets the pace for the group. Then an hour in the village for lunch before the train back.
The honest maths. The tour covers the guide fee only. You pay your train (910 yen each way since the March 2026 fare rise; the listing still says 1,720 yen return, now 1,820), the 500 yen temple entry and lunch. Alone, Yamadera costs about 2,320 yen with the entry, and the signage is easy to follow. The $88 from-price is the per-person rate for the largest group, so a couple pays more each. You book a guide for the context, not the logistics.
In front of the stained glass on the second floor of Sendai station. You can also meet at Yamadera station if you arrive another way.
About an hour on the JR Senzan line, past rice fields and up into the mountains. Use Suica, a ticket or a JR pass.
From the Konponchudo hall through the San-mon gate and up the cedar stairway to the Okunoin, with stops at the Kaisando and the Godaido view.
Time in Yamadera village near the tourism association. Soba and tama konnyaku on a stick are the local picks.
The tour ends where it began, at Sendai station, about 5.5 hours after the start.
★★★★★Really Nice and reachable expérience. Mai has well planned everything. She is really open and we had the priviledge to be alone with her. She knows tons of historical infos [...] She is really kind and calm. For people like us who are fast overwhelmed it was heaven.

There are 1,015 stone steps from the main gate to the Okunoin. Fit walkers take 30 to 45 minutes up. The operator asks for moderate fitness and does not recommend the tour for back or heart problems or pregnancy.
Yes, easily. The local train runs direct in about an hour and the path is signposted. Read our Yamadera guide if you go alone; take the tour if you want the history and a slower, quieter day.
