Ginzan Onsen in winter 2026-27

The snowy onsen street is now reservation-first in winter. The 2026-27 rules were published on 27 October, and every shuttle ticket costs more than last year.

Ginzan Onsen is a single street of wooden inns along a river in Obanazawa, Yamagata. In snow, at dusk, with the gas lamps on, it is one of the most photographed hot spring towns in Japan, and one narrow road leads in. After years of jams, the town now runs a park-and-ride system all winter.

In mid October the 2026-27 rules were still a draft. They are final now: the Ginzan Onsen association published its 2026-27 winter access page on 27 October 2026.

The quick answer

From 19 December 2026 to 7 March 2027, day visitors park at the Taisho Roman-kan and ride a timed shuttle bus in. Round trips cost 700 to 1,200 yen booked ahead or 1,000 to 1,500 yen on the day, depending on the time slot. Morning and midday slots go on sale on 1 November 2026 for the whole season. Do not walk the 2 km in: the town asks you not to.

What are the Ginzan Onsen winter rules for 2026-27?

Park-and-ride from 19 December 2026 to 7 March 2027: leave the car at the Taisho Roman-kan and take a reserved shuttle bus.

The 2026-27 winter access page sets the period as 19 December 2026 to 7 March 2027, with a possible extension if snow requires; any change will be announced in early February 2027. Private cars may not drive into the hot spring town. You park at the Taisho Roman-kan, a roadside facility about 2 km below the street, and switch to the shuttle.

The town gives two reasons. There is a single road in and out, and a single stuck car can block ambulances. And in winter the building side of the street is closed because of snow sliding off roofs, so people walk on the river side of the centre line, which caps how many fit.

How much is the Ginzan Onsen shuttle bus, and when can you book?

700 to 1,200 yen return booked ahead, 300 yen more on the day. Morning and midday slots go on sale on 1 November 2026.

Prices depend on when your outbound bus leaves. Every advance ticket is 300 yen cheaper than the same ticket bought on the day. Last winter the round trip was 500 to 1,000 yen, so every slot costs more now.

Sales are staggered. Slots from 9:00 to 14:00 for the whole season go on sale on 1 November 2026. Slots from 14:00 to 18:00, the dusk slots everyone wants, open month by month: December dates on 1 November, January on 1 December, February on 1 January 2027 and 1 to 7 March on 1 February. Advance booking closes at 17:00 Japan time the day before. On the day, the ticket machine at the Taisho Roman-kan sells only seats that are left.

11:00 to 14:00700 yen1,000 yen
14:00 to 18:001,200 yen1,500 yen

When does the shuttle run, and how long can you stay?

Buses go in every 20 minutes from 9:00 to 18:00 and come back from 9:10 to 19:30. You get priority on the bus 90 minutes after your arrival.

Outbound buses leave the Taisho Roman-kan at :00, :20 and :40 past each hour; the ride is short. Return buses leave Ginzan at :10, :30 and :50, last one at 19:30. Your ticket names a priority return time 90 minutes after your outbound bus. Earlier buses take you if there are seats. Miss your own and you join the standby queue.

The town is honest about the queue: waits grow toward evening, and in past seasons some visitors waited three hours. Ninety minutes is enough for the street, the bridges and a foot bath. If you want the lamps at dusk, book the 15:40 or 16:00 bus and accept that the ride back may be slow.

Can you walk, take a taxi or a route bus to Ginzan Onsen in winter?

Do not walk. Route bus passengers without an entry booking get off at the Taisho Roman-kan and switch to the shuttle.

The road from the Taisho Roman-kan has no cleared pavement in winter, the snow walls narrow it by 1 to 1.5 m in places, and a blizzard can cut visibility to a few metres. The town asks everyone not to walk it, whatever the wait.

Coming by train, you reach Oishida station and take the route bus. The town plans to let route bus passengers without an entry reservation off at the Taisho Roman-kan to change to the shuttle, and may hold back route bus arrivals at the town end when it is crowded. It also warns about unlicensed paid pick-ups offering to beat the rules. Refuse them.

Which tours from Sendai include the Ginzan Onsen shuttle?

The H.I.S. coach tour lists the shuttle fee as included. The JTB small-group day travels by train via Oishida.

The Ginzan Onsen bus tour leaves the east exit of Sendai station at 9:30, includes lunch, fruit picking and the Ginzan shuttle fee, and gives you 1 hour 45 minutes in the town, for $162. Read the small print: it needs 15 people to run, children must be 7 or older, and the listing warns that shuttle congestion can delay the return to Sendai significantly.

The Yamadera and Ginzan Onsen day by JTB is the long, fit option: 7:50 am to about 8:30 pm, a maximum of eight people, Yamadera's steps in the morning and Ginzan in the afternoon, transport and admissions included, $356. It returns by train from Oishida. Our Zao and Ginzan winter guide compares both with going alone.
