Half a day with a licensed guide

A government-licensed guide meets you in central Sendai and spends four hours on the two or three sights you choose, from Date Masamune's mausoleum to the cave-cut cedar approach of Zuiganji. Pick it when you have one morning, little Japanese and no wish to work out trains and ferry times yourself.

Sendai & Matsushima Half Day with a Licensed Guide

About this experience

This is the most-reviewed tour in Sendai, and it is simpler than the title suggests: you hire a licensed English-speaking guide for four hours, and the two of you build the morning from a list of about twenty sights. In the city that list runs from Zuihoden, the gilded mausoleum of Date Masamune, to the Aoba Castle site, Osaki Hachiman shrine and the SS30 tower. Out of town it covers Matsushima (Zuiganji, Entsu-in, Godaido, Fukuurajima, Kanrantei, Oshima) and Shiogama, with its shrine and fish market. Guides write before the day to plan it with you, and guests name Riko, Yumi, Sanichi and Ichiro "Bob" Kusaka.

What you pay for is the guide and nothing else. The listing excludes transport, entry fees and lunch, and you settle those in yen as you go. For Matsushima that means 880 yen for the round trip on the JR Senseki line, 1,000 yen for Zuiganji (up from 700 yen since April 2026, per Zuiganji's own site), 500 yen for Entsu-in and 1,500 yen if you add the 50-minute bay cruise. Count about 3,000 to 4,000 yen per person on top of the tour price. The guide's own entries are covered.

Two caveats. The $107 figure is the per-person rate for the largest group (up to 7), so a couple pays more each; check the price for your own head count before you decide. And four hours is tight for Matsushima: the train eats 80 minutes of it, which leaves time for two sights, or one and the boat. One guest put it plainly: be ready to walk briskly. If you want the bay without the rush, the six-hour version fits it better, and so does Mai's full day in Matsushima.

We had a wonderful half day tour with our friendly and knowledgeable guide, Riko. She was so accommodating, adjusting the tour to our fitness level and interests. We started at the beautiful Fukuurabashi bridge, touring the island, then we went to observe the Zuiganji temple caves. [...]

We hired Ichiro Kusaka, aka Bob, to take us on a half-day tour from our ship that was docked in Sendai port. [...] He also made sure we got back to our ship on time since they moved our departure time up on us.

Tips before you book

  • Ask for the price for your exact group size before you book: the headline figure is the largest-group rate.
  • Bring 4,000 to 5,000 yen in cash per person for a Matsushima morning. An IC card such as Suica covers the train.
  • Cruise passengers: ships usually run a shuttle to JR Nakanosakae station, then it is about 20 minutes to Sendai on the same Senseki line that runs on to Matsushima. Tell the guide your all-aboard time.
  • In Matsushima, pick either the boat or a second temple. Trying to do Zuiganji, Entsu-in and the cruise in four hours means rushing all three.
  • Zuihoden closes at 16:50 (last entry 16:30), and at 16:20 in December and January. Put it first on an afternoon tour.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Japan Guide Agency half day include the train and entry fees?

No. You pay your own trains, taxis, entries and lunch in yen on the day; only the guide's own entry fees are covered. For Matsushima budget 880 yen for the return train, 1,000 yen for Zuiganji and 1,500 yen if you add the bay cruise.

Is the $107 price per person or per group?

Per person, but it changes with group size. $107 is the rate for the largest group (up to 7 people), so two people pay more each. Viator shows the exact figure once you enter your group size.

Can we do Matsushima in a four-hour tour?

Yes, but only two sights or one sight and the boat. The train takes about 40 minutes each way. Guests describe a brisk pace; for a relaxed bay day pick the six-hour tour.

Can the guide meet us at the cruise ship?

No. The listing says cruise-port pickup is not available and the guide meets you on foot in central Sendai. Cruise guests reach Sendai station by the ship shuttle and the JR Senseki line.
