Booking choice: The Sendai and Matsushima full day, from $143 per person. Check dates Tour details
People ask us about the fox village more than almost any other day trip from Sendai, and there is no Viator tour that goes there. That says something. This guide covers what you need to decide for yourself: how to get there, what it costs, what the rules inside are, and what welfare investigators found.
We don't sell a fox village tour, and we would rather you read the criticism before you buy a ticket than after.
The quick answer
Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Sendai to Shiroishi-Zao (about 15 minutes), then a taxi of about 20 minutes; local buses barely run. Entry is 1,500 yen from junior high age up, open 9:00 to 16:30 (16:00 in winter), closed Wednesdays. No Viator tour goes there. The Japan Animal Welfare Society documented fighting, untreated injuries and poor housing in 2022-2023, and PETA UK urges travellers to stay away.
Is there a tour from Sendai to Zao Fox Village?
Not on Viator, as of October 2026. Some bus tours on other platforms stop there, and private drivers will take you.
We searched every Sendai listing on Viator: none stops at the fox village. The full-day private tour and the half-day private tour are walking tours by train and taxi around Sendai and Matsushima; the fox park is not on their list of sites. Their operator, Japan Guide Agency, arranges private vehicles only on request, booked directly at least five days ahead.
Bus tours sold on Asian platforms such as Klook and KKday sometimes combine the fox village with Zao in winter. A chartered car with a driver is the other route. Both cost far more than doing it alone, which is easy enough with one taxi ride.
How do you get to Zao Fox Village from Sendai by public transport?
Tohoku Shinkansen to Shiroishi-Zao, about 15 minutes, then a taxi of about 20 minutes up the hill. Plan on the taxi.
The Shinkansen is the fast part. From Shiroishi-Zao station, official listings mention a city bus of about 25 minutes to the Kitsune-mura stop, but the service is a handful of runs on a few weekdays, and it is no use for a normal visit. A seasonal access bus from Togatta Onsen ran on winter weekends only, from 1 January to 29 March 2026.
Taxis wait at Shiroishi-Zao station. Fox-village guides quote around 4,000 yen each way; share it with three people and it stops hurting. Ask the fox village reception to call a taxi back, and book your return train with an hour of margin. A local train to Shiroishi station is a cheaper alternative to the Shinkansen, slower by about half an hour, with taxis there too.

How much does Zao Fox Village cost and when is it open?
1,500 yen from junior high age up; younger children free. Open 9:00 to 16:30 (16:00 in winter), last entry 30 minutes before, closed Wednesdays.
| Item | Detail (2026) |
|---|---|
| Entry | 1,500 yen, junior high and older; under that free |

Check dates for the Sendai and Matsushima full dayWhat are the rules inside the fox village?
Don't touch the foxes, don't run, and feed them only from the platform. They are not pets, and they bite.
- No touching adult foxes. Signs warn that they may bite.
- Feed from the platform only, with the food sold at the entrance. Hand-feeding is not allowed.
- Move slowly. Running and loose, swinging clothing such as long skirts or dangling straps can trigger the hunting instinct.
- Keep bags closed and dangling items tucked away.
- Echinococcus: the park says its foxes are bred on site and tested for the parasite found in wild foxes in Hokkaido.
The baby-fox holding session runs in spring only, in a separate area, for an extra fee.
What is the animal welfare criticism of Zao Fox Village?
A 2022-2023 Japan Animal Welfare Society investigation documented severe fighting, untreated injuries, inadequate housing and frozen water in winter. PETA UK tells travellers to avoid it.
The Japan Animal Welfare Society (JAWS) inspected the park in 2022 and 2023. As summarised on Wikipedia, it found fighting, untreated injuries, poor housing and frozen water bowls in winter; some changes followed, such as heated water bowls, but JAWS concluded that major issues persisted. Local authorities said they had limited powers, because Japanese law sets no specific care standards for foxes.
PETA UK, in an article of May 2026, cites footage of agitated, fighting foxes and visible injuries, and describes on-site breeding for paid cuddling sessions. Critics also point to the density: over 100 animals of a species that normally lives alone or in small family groups.
Our position is simple. We don't link a fox village tour and we don't recommend one. If you go, go knowing this, keep to the rules, and skip the paid kit-holding.
What can you do near Zao Fox Village instead?
Shiroishi Castle in town, the hot springs of Kamasaki and Togatta, and in the warmer months the Okama crater lake on the Zao Echo Line.
- Shiroishi Castle: a wooden reconstruction of the castle that guarded the Date domain's southern border, a short walk from Shiroishi station.
- Kamasaki Onsen: an old hot spring village by the river near Shiroishi, with day-bathing at some inns.
- Togatta Onsen: the Miyagi-side gateway to Zao, with inns and the base for the winter snowcat tours to the snow monsters.
- Zao Okama: the emerald crater lake at the top of the Zao Echo Line, reachable only while the road is open: it closes at 17:00 on 4 November 2026 and is planned to reopen at 11:00 on 23 April 2027. See the Echo Line closure post.

Is a private guide or driver a better way to spend the day?
If you want a guided day, spend it where guides work: Sendai and Matsushima. A driver to the fox village is possible but costly.
A licensed guide from Japan Guide Agency spends six hours on three or four sights of your choice in Sendai and Matsushima, from Date Masamune's mausoleum Zuihoden to the bay. Their list also includes the Nikka Miyagikyo distillery. Trains, taxis and entries are paid in yen on the day.
For wildlife in winter, the snow monsters of Zao are the better day out: see Zao snow monsters and Ginzan Onsen. For an easy day with no animals involved, Matsushima is 40 minutes away.
