The Zao Echo Line closes on 4 November

The mountain road to the Okama crater lake shuts for the winter at 17:00 on 4 November 2026. Here is what that means for a trip from Sendai, and what to do on Zao instead.

The Zao Echo Line is the 26 km mountain road that links Miyagi and Yamagata over Mount Zao, and it is the only way most visitors reach the Okama crater lake. Snow closes it every winter. In 2026 the first snow on Zao was observed on 28 October, and the road was shut all day on 29 October for ice.

This post covers the official dates for the 2026 closure and the 2027 reopening, the night rules that apply until then, and the winter trips that still work from Sendai.

The quick answer

The Echo Line closes for winter at 17:00 on Wednesday 4 November 2026 and is planned to reopen at 11:00 on Friday 23 April 2027. Until the closure it is shut every night from 17:00 to 8:00, and snow can close it on any day. Okama is out of reach by road all winter; the snow monsters on the Yamagata side are the winter reason to go up Zao.

When does the Zao Echo Line close for winter in 2026?

At 17:00 on 4 November 2026. The planned reopening is 11:00 on 23 April 2027.

The dates come from the Zao town tourism association road page, which publishes the road status for Miyagi Prefecture's side of the mountain and updated it on 29 October 2026. It lists the winter closure as running from 17:00 on 4 November 2026 to 11:00 on 23 April 2027, with the reopening marked as planned. Spring dates move with the snow, so treat April as a target, not a promise.

The road had a short season this year. It opened at 11:00 on 24 April 2026 after the opening ceremony at the Katta car park, according to Miyagi Prefecture, and closes six months and eleven days later.

Can you still see the Okama crater lake before the closure?

Only by car or taxi, only in daylight, and only on a dry day before 4 November. Snow has already closed the road once.

Between now and 4 November the Echo Line is open from 8:00 to 17:00 at best. The short toll road to the crater rim, the Zao Highline, runs from 8:00 to 16:30 with last entry at 16:00. Ice or fresh snow triggers a temporary closure with no notice the day before, which is what happened on 29 October.

Our view: do not build a trip around Okama in the last week of the season. If you are in Sendai with a car and the morning is clear, check the Zao town tourism association road page at breakfast and go early. Otherwise, wait for May. The lake is green, the wind on the rim is brutal by November, and the view is often a wall of cloud anyway.

Which part of the road closes, and what stays open?

The whole high section between the Bodaira gate on the Yamagata side and the Sumikawa gate on the Miyagi side. You can still drive up to the Sumikawa Snow Park.

The closure runs from the Zao Bodaira plateau gate near the Raiza World ski area, over the prefectural border and the Highline junction, past Daikokuten and Komakusadaira, down to the Sumikawa gate in front of the Sumikawa Snow Park. While it is shut, the road page is blunt: no Okama viewing and no crossing between Miyagi and Yamagata.

The lower Miyagi section stays open. That matters, because Sumikawa Snow Park is where the snowcat tours to the Miyagi side snow monsters start. Togatta Onsen, the hot spring village at the foot of the road, also stays open all winter.

How do you see Zao in winter from Sendai?

Go to the snow monsters. From late December the Zao Ropeway on the Yamagata side runs up to them, and snowcats run on the Miyagi side.

The winter star of Zao is the juhyo, firs coated in rime ice until they look like frozen creatures. On the Yamagata side, the Zao Ropeway climbs from Zao Onsen to Jizo Sancho station at 1,661 m; the round trip is 4,400 yen for adults on the Zao Ropeway fare page. In 2026-27 the ropeway lights the trees on 31 set nights between 26 December and 23 February.

On the Miyagi side, the road to Sumikawa stays open and heated snowcats carry visitors up to the trees. The H.I.S. snowcat night tour packages that from Sendai station, but it is non-refundable, so book only once your dates are fixed. Our post on the 2026-27 snow monster season has every light-up night and fare.

What can you do from Sendai in November instead?

Yamadera and Matsushima work all year and peak with autumn colour in early November. Neither needs a mountain road.

November is a good month for the trips that run by train. Yamadera is about an hour on the JR Senzan line and the cliff temples are at their best with the maples. Matsushima is 40 minutes on the Senseki line. Both are cheap alone: our day trips guide has the fares.

If you want the transport and entries handled, the Daikannon and Yamadera day pairs the 100 m white Sendai Daikannon statue with the Yamadera climb, by public transport, admissions included, with a maximum of six people.
