A private day in Matsushima

Mai takes you from Sendai station to Matsushima by local train for a full private day: Oshima's meditation caves, Entsu-in, Zuiganji, Godaido, the bay and the long red bridge to Fukuurajima. Pick it for the guide: guests rebook her for other trips and say she finds the lunch spots tourists miss.

Matsushima Private Tour by Train

About this experience

Mai is a licensed guide based in Sendai, and this is her most-booked tour: 22 reviews, all five stars. You meet at 9:00 in front of the stained glass on the second floor of Sendai station and take the local train to Matsushima. The day then runs at walking pace: over the Togetsukyo bridge to Oshima, where monks once meditated in caves cut into the rock, then Entsu-in, the main hall of Zuiganji, Godaido, an hour in town for lunch, an hour on the bay and 45 minutes on Fukuurajima before the train back.

The plan bends. Guests write that she changed the day for weather, swapped in the Shiogama fish market and Shiogama shrine on a wet day, found gyutan when they asked for it and steered them to a shop with second-hand kimono jackets. You get a whole day with someone who knows the trains, the boats and the restaurants.

What it costs on top. The fee covers the guide only. You pay your train (the listing quotes the old 840 yen return; it is 880 yen since March 2026), entries (Zuiganji is now 1,000 yen, Entsu-in 500 yen, Fukuurajima 200 yen), the bay cruise at 1,500 yen (or 1,350 yen if she books it ahead) and lunch for yourself and for your guide. Count about 4,000 yen per person plus two lunches. The $106 from-price is the largest-group rate, so a couple pays more each.

  • A full private day, 6 to 7 hours, at your pace
  • Oshima's carved caves and the Togetsukyo bridge
  • Zuiganji, Entsu-in and Godaido in one walk
  • The 252 m red Fukuura bridge to the pine island
  • A guide who adapts the plan to weather and interests

What guests say

★★★★★

Loved the tour we had with mai! She knows all the hotspots the tourists don't know and can tell you a lot about the history of the monks, samurais, the temples and the islands. [...] Around lunchtime we really wanted to taste gyutan, so she looked for restaurants that served it.

Main was an excellent tour guide. She customized to our needs and even found a store that sold used kimono jackets at a reasonable price. While the focus of the day was on Matsushima, she also included a stop at a seafood market in Shigoma. [...]

We had a wonderful day with Mai. Her knowledge of the region, the special places, and the history has brought a better understanding of the beautiful environment and its culture. [...] In short, a professional who offers value for her money!

Mai did a great job telling us about Matsushima, the beautiful landscapes and small islands in the area, and the spiritual elements. It was amazing views and great food, would go back!

Tips before you book

  • Budget for two lunches: yours and the guide's are both on you.
  • Ask Mai to book the cruise in advance: the listing says it saves 150 yen each.
  • If rain is forecast, ask about the Shiogama fish market and shrine. Guests who switched were glad they did.
  • Booking is confirmed within 48 hours. In autumn colour season (late October to November) book early.
  • Bring an IC card such as Suica for the train, and cash for temple entries.
