Booking choice: The Matsushima day tour with cruise, from $171 per person. Check dates Tour details
Older guidebooks, blog posts and even some tour listings still quote 2025 prices for Sendai. Four rises landed in 2026: JR East in March, Zuiganji in April, Japan's departure tax in July and Sendai's city buses, including the Loople, in October.
None of them is large on its own. Added up, a DIY day trip costs a few hundred yen more than last year, which still leaves it far cheaper than any tour.
The quick answer
JR East fares rose on 14 March 2026: Sendai to Matsushima-Kaigan is now 440 yen and Sendai to Yamadera 910 yen each way. Zuiganji went from 700 to 1,000 yen on 1 April. The Loople one-day pass went from 630 to 700 yen on 1 October. The departure tax is 3,000 yen per person from 1 July 2026.
How much did JR East fares go up in March 2026?
On average 7.1%, and 7.8% for ordinary tickets, from 14 March 2026. It was JR East's first general fare rise since 1987.
JR East's fare revision touched every line around Sendai. For the day trips that matters in small steps: 20 yen more each way to Matsushima, 50 yen more to Yamadera. Two Viator listings, Mai's Matsushima day and her Yamadera tour, still quote the old round-trip fares of 840 and 1,720 yen. Bring the difference in coins.
The Sendai Airport Access Line also changed: it is 680 yen to the airport (672 yen with an IC card), and the rapid trains are gone, so every train is a local, about 25 minutes.
| Route from Sendai | Before 14 March 2026 | Now (one way) |
|---|---|---|
| Matsushima-Kaigan (Senseki line) | 420 yen | 440 yen |
| Yamadera (Senzan line) | 860 yen | 910 yen |
| Sakunami, for Nikka (Senzan line) | n/a | 530 yen |
| Sendai Airport (Airport Access Line) | n/a | 680 yen |
How much is Zuiganji in 2026?
1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for elementary and junior high pupils, since 1 April 2026. It was 700 and 400.
The temple's fee notice of 15 March 2026 sets adults (high school and up) at 1,000 yen and children at 500 yen, with 900 and 400 for groups of 30 or more. The announcement blames rising upkeep costs and a full renovation of the treasure hall.
Yamadera rose a year earlier. Risshakuji has charged 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for children aged 4 and up since 1 April 2025. The Matsushima bay cruise (Niomaru course, 50 minutes) is 1,500 yen on the Matsushima tourism site.

How much is the Loople bus in Sendai now?
700 yen for a one-day pass and 300 yen a ride since 1 October 2026. The Loople and subway pass is 1,000 yen.
Sendai raised all city bus fares on 1 October 2026, by 15.38% on average, according to the Sendai City Transportation Bureau notice. The Loople sightseeing loop, which runs past Zuihoden, the Aoba Castle site and Osaki Hachiman, went up with them. Passes bought before 30 September stay valid at the old price until they expire.
Three rides make the day pass worth it. For Zuihoden and the castle site alone, two single rides plus a short walk cost less.
| Ticket | Until 30 Sept 2026 | From 1 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Loople single ride | 260 yen | 300 yen |
| Loople one-day pass | 630 yen | 700 yen |
| Loople and subway one-day pass | 920 yen | 1,000 yen |
| City bus, minimum fare | 160 yen | 190 yen |
What does a DIY day trip from Sendai cost now, compared with a tour?
Matsushima by train with Zuiganji and the cruise is 3,380 yen, about $22. Yamadera with the temple fee is 2,320 yen.
Matsushima: 880 yen return on the Senseki line, 1,000 yen for Zuiganji and 1,500 yen for the cruise. Yamadera: 1,820 yen return and 500 yen for the temple. Even after this year's rises, going alone is cheap and easy.
A tour earns its price with the guide, not the logistics. The Matsushima day tour at $171 includes the trains, every admission and the cruise, with a small group and someone explaining what you see. The private walking tours are different: the Sendai and Matsushima half day covers the guide only, so the fares above come on top.

Matsushima with the trains, every entry and the 50-minute cruise already paid. Lunch is extra.

Yes. The International Tourist Tax is 3,000 yen per departure from 1 July 2026, up from 1,000 yen.
The National Tax Agency collects it through airlines and ferry companies, so it sits inside your ticket price. The Japan Tourism Agency's English leaflet says tickets bought before 1 July 2026 keep the old 1,000 yen rate. Children under 2 are exempt, as before.
Which winter prices around Sendai are new for 2026-27?

The Zao Ropeway's night ticket for the snow monster light-up rose by 200 yen; day fares stay at 4,400 yen. The Ginzan Onsen winter shuttle costs more in every slot and now rewards booking ahead. Details are in our posts on the Zao snow monsters and Ginzan Onsen in winter.
